About Cotuit 2007 Population: 3,244 One of the seven villages of Barnstable, Cotuit is a peninsula on the southwest side of Barnstable, about midway between Falmouth and Hyannis. Cotuit is bounded by Mashpee to the west, the village of Marstons Mills and Osterville to the east. Cotuit was so named for the famous Cotuit Oysters, a business started in 1857 by Captain William Childs. Cotuit was once divided in two by postal offices - Old Cotuit and Cotuit Port, but merged in the late 1800’s. In the early 1900’s, Cotuit was developed in favor of tourism, with its superb location and with miles of coastline in Cotuit Bay and Nantucket Sound. Some notable names in Cotuit: Crocker, Thacher, Folger, Scudder, Bearse, Phinney, Coleman and Nickerson. Cotuit is also known for art and culture – be sure and visit the Cahoon Museum of Modern Art as well as the Cotuit Center for the Arts; both can be found on Falmouth Road.
